Honduras Points Finger at Guatemala as Trash Swamps Beaches

A flood of waste swamped some usually picturesque beaches along the Caribbean coast of Honduras on September 19, with locals saying the trash came from a river in neighboring Guatemala.

Video here shows waves of mostly plastic trash at a beach in Omao.

“We are committed to cleaning our beaches and keeping them clean, but today we are demanding that authorities in Tegucigalpa take strong actions, actions to find a permanent solution to this problem,” Lilian Rivera, an official from the ministry of environment, was reported to have said.

The Honduran news site La Prensa said Guatemalan authorities had committed to clearing the Motagua River of trash. They said they had taken 60 tons of waste from the river in August, but blamed the current situation on heavy rain. Credit: @33Joseduran via Storyful
