Bonham Carter & Corbett In New Year Honours

Stars from the world of entertainment and sport are among those featured in the New Year Honours list, which is published today.

Actress Helena Bonham Carter, golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke , cricket umpire Dickie Bird and veteran comedian Ronnie Corbett all make the list.

Award-winning Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford receives an OBE for her reporting in 2011 which saw her cover the Arab spring from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Bahrain.

The list is made up of hundreds of people from all walks of life including 15 head teachers, 10 school or college principals, four Parliamentarians and numerous volunteers and charity workers.

University Hospital Birmingham chief executive Julie Moore, who came up with the idea for a military hospital in Selly Oak and helped set it up, receives a DBE.

She said she was "honoured" to accept it on behalf of all her colleagues in Birmingham who have helped troops who are brought home injured from Afghanistan.

Helena Bonham Carter, who gets a CBE, told Sky News Online she was "thrilled though not sure that I deserve it".

"I always thought my father deserved a medal for facing 25 years of chronic disability with quiet daily heroism, so I am delighted to accept such a wonderful honour in his memory," said The King's Speech star.

"I'm wondering does it mean I get to command? Because at the moment it's my four-year-old daughter who does the commanding in our household. Must inform her of the change in situation."

Among the 420 women who feature on the list, 43% of the total recipients, was Sky News' special correspondent Alex Crawford , who said that she initially thought that news of the honour was a joke by colleagues.

She said: "I am staggered and honoured and cannot quite believe this is not a prank thought up by one of my more mischievous colleagues. TV news is never about just one person.

"Behind me and beside me are my fellow reporters, producers, camera crews, editors and directors. It is a genuine team effort and this fantastic accolade is for all of us."

Head of Sky News John Ryley added: "I am enormously proud of all that Alex has achieved over her 20 plus years at Sky News. This honour is wholly deserved.

"Alex's determination and bravery as a reporter is relentless and this recognition acts as a testament to journalism at its very best."

Comedian Ronnie Corbett and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly both receive CBEs, while OBEs are picked up by sports broadcaster Stuart Hall and Open winner Darren Clarke.

Fellow Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy gets an MBE for winning the US Open.

Jonathan Ive , who designed the iPod, is made a knight.

Author and broadcaster Clive James is made a CBE, while there are MBEs for the actor David Harewood and radio presenter David Rodigan.

A total of 984 people were recommended to the Queen for inclusion in the New Year Honour list.
