Horrifying moment lightning strikes home causing 'huge explosion'

This is the horrifying moment when lightning struck a home causing a 'huge explosion' last night.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene where a cordon went up and residents were evacuated at around 5.25pm on Saturday. Now security footage shared with Stoke-on-Trent Live shows the very moment a lighting bolt appeared to hit the property on Bambury Street in Longton.

A bright yellow flash comes from the roof in what looks like flames. Fire crews were called to the scene and neighbours from surrounding properties were evacuated after hearing "a massive bang".

One witness said a motorist had stopped and told them the home's roof was on fire. The incident came at a time where the city was under a yellow warning for thunderstorms.

It's understood around 1,700 homes across North Staffordshire were left without power with a number of properties also reporting problems with their water supplies. A number of key roads were also left submerged after heavy rain.

A yellow warning remains in place while a flood warning and flood alerts have also been issued for parts of North Staffordshire.
