According to local officials, Lakdim shouted "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is great") before opening fire in the supermarket at around 11 a.m. Friday morning.

According to French media reports, the attacker shouted his allegiance to ISIS during the attack. French authorities have declared the event a terrorist attack.

Lakdim reportedly demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam, the sole living suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks, as part of a negotiation with authorities.

During the stand-off, a senior police officer offered himself as a substitute for one of the hostages, which was accepted.

After being taken hostage he was badly injured, although details of how are not clear. Collomb, the interior minister, praised his "heroism and bravery".

The local news outlet La Vie à Trèbes posted this video of the police response while the attack was still taking place:

It is unclear whether the Lakdim had any direct ties to ISIS, the terrorist group also known as the Islamic State. Attackers often dedicate their action to the group despite having no direct contact with them.

In the wake of the attack, the ISIS's Amaq news agency claimed the attack and described Lakdim as a "soldier of the caliphate."

French media reported that Lakdim had also struck earlier in the day in the nearby town of Carcassonne.

The French TV station BFMTV reported that he opened fire on a group of policemen before heading to Trèbes, and hit one in the shoulder.
