Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Arsenal 'swoop for Lingard after Man Utd target Ozil', Chelsea 'face points deduction'

Arsene Wenger has spent more than a decade trying to outwit his nemesis Jose Mourinho, whether it’s with mind games in the media, shoving him on the touchline or poking him on Facebook, but somehow Mourinho always seems to come out on top.

And that familiar pattern may about to be repeated in the transfer market, as the two managers “go to war” once again.

That is the explosive phrase used by the Sun on Sunday as it reports that Wenger has launched a raid on Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard in response to Mourinho’s pursuit of Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.

United reportedly have a £300,000-a-week contract drawn up for the German playmaker and will try to take advantage of his contract uncertainty by signing him for a knockdown price.

But Wenger is “ready to fight back” by offering Lingard, who like Ozil has 18 months left to run on his contract, a “double-your-money deal” of £120,000 a week at the Emirates.

Which is fine, except that if both these deals go through Wenger would have just swapped a very good player (Ozil) for one who isn’t as good (Lingard). So it’s probably not the best thing to have a “war” about.

Things would perk up a bit if he signed Julian Draxler though. The Sunday Express says the Gunners are set to “open the cheque book” for the Wolfsburg winger in a £30m January deal. Surely a bank transfer would be easier.

Draxler has demanded to leave the Bundesliga outfit after being dropped for a match against Bayern Munich, who will probably try to sign him too.

West Ham seem increasingly likely to make a January move for Daniel Sturridge after manager Slaven Bilic said he had “no problem” with the Hammers being linked with the Liverpool striker, reports the Times.

Or maybe that’s just because he has far bigger problems in his life, such as trying to save the east Londoners from relegation. If he manages that, the Sunday Telegraph has predicted that the Irons will celebrate by signing Joe Hart from Manchester City next summer.

Elsewhere, West Brom are set to make a £15m move for out-of-favour Everton midfielder James McCarthy in January (Mail on Sunday), Man City director of football Txiki Begiristain has “run a personal check” on Borussia Dortmund hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Sun on Sunday) and John Terry could earn £12m next season playing for Shanghai Shenhua (Sun).

Finally, the Sunday Mirror says Chelsea are facing a points deduction over their brawl at the Etihad Stadium because it is the fifth time the Blues have been charged over player behaviour in the past 19 months. To be honest this just sounds like a shameless attempt just to stop Antonio Conte’s side winning the league – and that’s something we can all get behind.
