Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Palace ‘agree Batshuayi fee’, Chelsea ‘want Witsel and Morata’

The biggest football shock of the summer is upon us. It doesn’t make much sense - in all honesty it’s the kind of event that makes you fear for the very future of English football - but we simply have to get used to it. Because it’s happened and there is nothing we can do to change that.

Crystal Palace have agreed a £31.6m fee with Marseille for Michy Batshuayi.

The Belgian striker, who was first linked with Tottenham, and then West Ham, and most recently Juventus - and whose stock rose significantly this weekend when he scored with his touch at Euro 2016 - could instead be on the verge of a move to Selhurst Park, reports the Guardian.

Juve have also made a bid “in excess of £30m” while the Hammers’ offer is “worth up to €40m”, but Eagles’ co-owner Steve Parish has apparently “stolen a march” on his rivals.

Want to know how? He went to Nice last night to watch some other game of football, saw the Marseille president Vincent Labrune and made the offer direct to his face! Simple as that. That’s what the Guardian says anyway.

That’s not all Palace have been up to either. The broadsheet adds that the south Londoners have also triggered Andros Townsend’s £10.5m release clause at Newcastle, as well as being close to the signing of Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda on a free transfer.

Yesterday’s unlikely transfer story involving another impressive Belgian, Alex Witsel, who was linked to Stoke, is looking even less likely today. The Mail reports that the midfielder is a target for Chelsea and Everton, which could put paid to the Potters’ interest.

The Blues are also still trying to sign Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for about £45m (Mirror) and have had a third bid for yet another Belgian midfielder, Radja Nainggolan, turned down by Roma (Star).

In happier news, full-back flop Baba Rahman could be set to leave Stamford Bridge after Lazio made an offer of £13m for him (Mirror). That’s about £9m less than the Blues paid for him last year, but they probably won’t complain about that.

Today’s good news for Arsenal fans is that they have made an offer for exciting Brazilian teenage striker Gabriel Barbosa (Sun), but the much worse news is that Barcelona are being tipped to swoop for Gunners right-back Hector Bellerin after letting Dani Alves join Juventus (Standard).

Elsewhere, Everton are set to sign Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg (Liverpool Echo), Hull are considering a £5m swoop for Augsburg’s Paraguayan striker Raul Bobadilla (Mirror) and Manchester City are set to snap up Colombian “wonderkid” Marlos Moreno for £8m (Mail).

Oh and finally, we really didn’t want to mention this, but the favourite to take over as the next England manager, according to the Sun, is Gareth Southgate. Gareth Southgate. Gareth. Southgate. Gar. Eth. South. Gate. Yep.
