Hotel Hammer Attacks: Man Appears In Court

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a hammer attack on a family at a luxury hotel in central London earlier this month.

Philip Spence, 32, from Hounslow, west London, appeared at Southwark Crown Court to face three counts of attempted murder and one of aggravated burglary.

He was joined in the dock by James Moss, 33, Neofitos Efremi, 56, and Carly Baker, 31, who are all accused of handling stolen goods.

The offences relate to an attack on a family from the United Arab Emirates who were staying at the four-star Cumberland Hotel near Marble Arch on April 6.

One of the victims lost 95% of her brain function and her left eye in the attack, according to police.

The other two sisters also suffered serious injuries.

One has two fractures to her skull, a fracture to her cheekbone, a broken left arm and a fracture to her cheekbone, the other has a fractured skull and a ruptured eardrum.

The judge remanded the three male defendants in custody, while Carly Baker was released on bail.

The case will be heard again at Southwark Crown Court on July 3.
