Hotel shuts with 'immediate effect' as staff and guests ordered to leave

A Stoke-on-Trent hotel has closed with immediate effect as staff and guests have been ordered to leave. It is understood that all guests were told to leave The George Hotel in Burslem this morning (June 6).

StokeonTrentLive readers say the Swan Square hotel has had its locks changed.

One guest said he had been left on the streets with nowhere to go. He added: "As of now me and several other guests have been forced to leave. There are over 100 people who have been kicked out on the street with nowhere to stay. All the staff are no longer in a job. It looks like the hotel has been shut down for good."

A manager told BBC Radio Stoke that staff were not being paid and that many of the tenants were vulnerable.

It is understood that Stoke-on-Trent City Council is now being asked to find accommodation for those who are now homeless. StokeonTrentLive has contacted the council for a statement.

The hotel was previously put up for auction with a guide price of £1.4 million in 2022. It has 42 en-suite bedrooms, a 65-cover restaurant, a 120-seat lounge bar, three function rooms and a flat with four bedrooms. There is also parking for 20 vehicles.
