A property built on top of a specially designed cave has gone on the market for offers above £1.75m.

The 19th century home was originally built to house the owner's collection of statues.

The five-bedroom house, on the Park Estate in Nottingham, is being advertised by estate agents FHP Living, who confirmed it comes with planning permission to build a 7,000 square foot contemporary home on top of the 'enchanting' caves.

The column caves were designed by Alderman Thomas Herbert, a wealthy lace manufacturer, between 1850 and 1876.

They were originally designed to house Herbert's collection of full-sized statues of gods, druidical figures and Jesus.

In its current form, the property boasts a large entrance hall, sweeping staircase, modern living room and lounge diner, according to the agents.

The three-storey house also has planning permission for a major redevelopment.

An artist's impression created by Jackson Crane Architects shows permission for an 'iconic architectural masterpiece' built on top of the sandstone pillared caves.

The development would more than double the size of the house on the existing plot, according to its listing.

Proposals include an airy sky-lit foyer, vast contemporary open-plan kitchen, entertaining space and a gymnasium.

The design also includes an indoor pool, garden room with views of the terrace and caves, a galleried landing, a study, snug, utility area and laundry room, plus two home office rooms.

A spokesman for FHP Living said: "This fabulous property sits on one of the largest plots in the prestigious Park Estate, in a prime location with commanding views.

"To our knowledge the proposed dwelling will be one of the largest of any contemporary homes that has ever come to the estate and as such will be an exciting project to any discerning purchaser."
