Houston Volunteers Prepare Water Donations for Jackson, Mississippi

The City of Houston, Texas, hosted a donation event on Friday, September 2, to send water to Jackson, Mississippi, where tens of thousands of people were left without running water after a pump failure.

Footage posted to the city’s official Twitter shows volunteers, including retired Houston Rockets player Robert Reid, collecting water donations outside Houston City Hall on Friday morning.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba declared a water system emergency due to complications from the Pearl River flooding that occurred last week. However, the aging water system has been experiencing disruptions for years, local reports said.

On Thursday, the City of Jackson reported “continued progress” while working to restore water pressure, but did not offer an estimated time for when they expect the water system to be functional. Credit: City of Houston via Storyful
