The Houston Zoo welcomed a baby female Masai giraffe on Monday, April 10. Mother Tyra was in labor for two hours before giving birth to the girl, who has yet to be named.
Mother and baby are bonding behind the scenes while zoo staff watches over them, according to the zoo. The calf will make her public debut after a few days alone with her mother.
The calf weighs 149 pounds and is estimated at six feet, three inches tall, the zoo said. She is the sixth giraffe at the Houston Zoo.
