HSBC online banking down leaving customers unable to log in to accounts

HSBC have said some of its customers are unable to access online banking, the second outage of their digital services in weeks.

"We are investigating further and will provide further updates," the bank said on Twitter after a number of customers used the social media platform to flag problems accessing HSBC's site.

"Our Mobile Banking App is available or if your query is urgent please call us on 03457 404 404. We are sorry for any inconvenience."

The bank's mobile banking app also suffered a brief glitch in September, one of a series of outages at Britain's biggest lenders in the past few months.

Technical problems at banks have prompted criticism from customers and from lawmakers, who in September called on Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays to explain what caused the problems and how they would compensate affected customers.

Scores of HSBC customers took to Twitter to vent their frustration with the online banking chaos on Tuesday.

"Your website appears to have crashed. Info would be useful," one person wrote.

Another frustrated customer tweeted at around 12.30pm to say the website had been down "for the past half an hour".

Outages can cause significant disruption to customers, who are increasingly reliant on digital services as banks close branches and encourage clients to move online.

The impact of a severe outage was brought into focus earlier this year, when TSB was plunged into chaos after a botched IT migration saw some customers locked out of their accounts for over a week.

The outage tarnished TSB's brand just as it was gearing up to try and win more market share from Britain's biggest banks.

It also cost hundreds of millions of pounds and prompted the resignation of the bank's CEO Paul Pester

A spokesperson from HSBC told the Standard: "We are aware that some of our customers have experienced intermittent issues accessing HSBC UK online banking services today, and are working hard to fix this.

"We ask that customers wait a few minutes and try again. Alternatively, they can access their accounts via HSBC UK Mobile Banking and Telephone Banking.

"We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused."
