Huawei unveils Eyewear smartglasses designed to be indistinguishable from regular glasses

Chinese smartphone giant Huawei has unveiled a new pair of smartglasses, six years after Google's failed Glass endeavour.

Partnering with Korean sunglasses brand Gentle Monster, Huawei said it aimed to fuse fashion and technology with its Eyewear smartglasses.

In order to avoid the mistakes of previous efforts to launch smartglasses, Huawei said the focus should be on the glasses themselves, not the technology that is embedded within them.

Unlike Google Glass or Snapchat's Spectacles, the Huawei Eyewear will not feature a camera - a function that gave wearers of the Google glasses the unfortunate nickname of 'Glassholes'.

"Maybe we have to change the approach to smart eyewear.," Gentle Monster CEO Hankook Kim said at the unveiling event in Paris on Tuesday. "Maybe we should change the order to 'eyewear smart'."

To fit with this no approach, the Eyewear sunglasses will come in a range of styles and will be almost indistinguishable from regular glasses.

There will be no buttons or charging ports, instead they can respond to taps and be charged wirelessly from within their case.

So what can they actually do? The main function is to provide a seamless link to a wearer's smartphone through a range of mics, speakers and bluetooth technology.

This will allow wearers to take calls and access smart assistants through voice commands .Few other details were given by Huawei, with no word yet on how much they might cost. They will be available from July 2019.

The Eyewear smartglasses were unveiled alongside a range of other hardware, including Huawei's new P30 series of flagship smartphones.
