Huddersfield bank health and safety fears as new building plans submitted
Plans to repair part of a Huddersfield bank are awaiting a decision from Kirklees Council, as concerns are raised for the safety of part of the building.
Lloyds Bank is located in a Listed town centre property, on the corner of Westgate and Market Place. However, the seven balconies towards the top of the historic building are said to have become a health and safety issue.
Images on behalf of the applicant - Lloyds Banking Group - show the extent of the damage, with the floor of the balconies appearing cracked and crumbling in some places, and railings that are disintegrating.

The plan is to remove the existing railings and install replacements that are like for like, and make repairs to the asphalt floor. A coating would also be put on the topside of all balconies to prevent water from causing further damage.
A supporting document says: “The work will be conducted with minimal disruption to the surrounding area. Access for the removal and restoration will be managed to ensure safety and efficiency, with a keen focus on preserving the building's structural and aesthetic integrity.
“There will be no visual differences once the work is completed as the goal is to replace the existing railings with like for like to match the existing, as the same with the asphalt floor repair too. The plans show the existing/proposed railings which will be the only noticeable works during the build.”
A decision on the plans is due by December 16.
