A restaurant owner is offering a 'kids eat free' deal to help families make the pennies go a little further during school holidays.

Ian Braund of Holmfirth Tex-Mex restaurant Mexicali has a deal where one child eats for free with one full-price adult meal. The deal is available on bank holidays, school holidays and has been extended to become No Whinge Wednesdays.

Ian says it's the restaurant's way of helping families during the cost of living crisis. Big companies offer similar deals but Ian says it is not always possible for smaller restaurants to get the word out.

He said: "We started it in 2021 after the pandemic to make eating out more accessible to all, especially during school holidays when kids school meals aren’t available.

"We decided to make this offer run every school holiday and bank holiday so treats are more readily available to families that don’t have the ability to always take their kids out. Further more, we actually now do what’s called 'No Whinge Wednesdays' every week where kids can eat free every Wednesday.

"We feel it’s important to be able to offer this to all because why should some children miss out on the fun and excitement of eating out every once in a while. We like to make sure everyone has the opportunity to eat with us and take that time out as a family to enjoy something together no matter how small it is."

Ian, formerly of Gringos in Huddersfield town centre, where he was chef and manager, opened Mexicali in 2020.
