Huddersfield school handed 'glowing' report for 'meticulous' approach and 'compassionate pupils'

Inspectors have praised a Huddersfield school's "meticulous systems of evaluation" and broad curriculum.

The Mount School in Edgerton, Huddersfield, an independent preparatory school for children aged from three to 11, has been evaluated by the Independent Schools Inspectorate for the quality of its education, leadership, and safeguarding. The school, which has around 100 pupils, occupies a converted family home.

The report commends the school’s leadership, commitment to student wellbeing, and academic achievements. The emotional wellbeing, academic progress and attainment of all pupils has been identified as a 'significant strength', the marker for excellence within the new inspection framework. The Mount is currently the only independent preparatory school in the North of England to hold such an accolade.

Inspectors praised the school's leadership for its "meticulous systems of evaluation to ensure that everyone acts in the best interests of the pupils in their care."

The report highlighted the vision of leaders who "respond with structured systems and initiatives" to promote the academic and personal development of every child.

Responding to the report, headteacher Euan Burton-Smith said: "This report is a testament to the dedication and passion of our staff, who work tirelessly to create an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

"Our focus on individual support and high expectations helps all our pupils achieve their best, and it is heartening to see this recognised in such glowing terms."

Among the strengths celebrated in the report are:

  • Mental health and wellbeing. Specific initiatives and close monitoring of pupil wellbeing is said to positively impact students' self-esteem and academic progress.

  • High academic standards: Pupils’ work often surpasses national age-related expectations

  • Focus is given to preparing pupils for local grammar school 11+ entrance examinations.

  • Inspectors noted the "consistent and effective" behaviour management that fosters respect and collaboration, enabling pupils to value each other’s successes and feedback.

  • Leaders’ commitment to safeguarding, equality, and diversity was highlighted as exemplary, with inspectors affirming that "all relevant standards are met" across key areas, including education quality, wellbeing, and governance.

School director Chris Sellers said: "At The Mount, we are proud to nurture not just academic excellence but well-rounded, compassionate individuals who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to society. Our bespoke financial and economic education programme, for example, equips students with essential life skills like budgeting and entrepreneurship.
