Huddersfield school's tribute to pupil James Wilton, 18, killed in Ukraine
A school headteacher has paid tribute to a former pupil who was killed by a Russian drone in Ukraine.
James Wilton, 18, from Huddersfield, put aside his college life and set off to join international combatants, defying the concerns of his family and spurred by a desire to contribute and bring aid to those afflicted by the conflict. His life was tragically cut short in July during a drone strike and despite valiant attempts by his comrade, an American named Jason, his injuries were too severe and he died.
The teenager was reportedly killed in a drone attack in the village of Terny on the eastern front. James was on his first mission when he was killed running between two trenches in a field with no cover.

James' dad Graham, who didn't agree with his son's decision to go to Ukraine, described his son as a "polite, likeable young man". He and James had shared a home in Lindley, Huddersfield, before James decided to go and fight in Ukraine.
The young man's former school and college have also paid tribute to him. Jenny Carr, executive headteacher at Royds Hall, Huddersfield, said: "The school community is deeply saddened to learn that James Wilton, a former pupil and valued member of our school community has passed away.
"James left the school in summer 2022 and successfully secured a placed at Kirklees College.
"James was a well-liked member of the school. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to James’ friends, family and all that were fortunate to know him."
A Kirklees College spokesperson said: "We are deeply saddened at the news of James Wilton’s tragic passing, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
