Huge barn blaze near A1 with firefighters warning drivers to keep windows shut

Fire crews have been called out this morning to battle a barn inferno close to the A1.

County Durham and Darlington fire service urged drivers heading along the A1 to shut their windows and switch off air conditioning due to smoke from the fire in the Sherburn House area. The fire has been going since at least 8.30am, when it was called in to the fire service, reports Chronicle Live.

In an online statement, the fire service spokesperson announced: "We're currently in attendance at a barn fire in the Sherburn House area, near the A1."

They added: "At 8.30am this morning we received a report of a fire and we currently have five crews in attendance and a specialist bulk water carrier."

Drivers were also advised: "We ask motorists travelling in the area along the A1 to keep their windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed as they pass the area. Thanks, as ever, for your support and co-operation and we'll update you when we can."
