A huge new regeneration project is being planned for Coventry. Dubbed 'City Centre North' it would cover an area by the city's transport museum.

New homes, public spaces and transport links are part of early plans for the site. The project is being promoted by Coventry council as an opportunity for a "strategic investor" to work in partnership with them.

Their work would deliver "significant housing growth," in the centre, the council's website states. While the project is at "concept" stage some details of the council's aims are set out in a description on its website.

The scheme would be mixed use, meaning it would involve both residential and other spaces. It would include "access hubs" expanding the Coventry VLR links and making it easier to use public transport to get to the city.

The council also aims to "encourage new inner-city communities," it adds. "The way some people choose to live is changing so we want to support this by providing environments including new co-living hubs, subscription living, creative studios and live-work spaces, as well as new townhouses and apartments," it says.

Plans for the scheme are referred to in council papers for a meeting next week. It said the council had been looking at how land on the northern edge of the centre could "accommodate physical regeneration and development and the delivery of new homes whilst making better use of cultural and heritage assets, green space and public realm."

"This was completed in March 2024 and informs the wider City Centre Vision and we are now looking at how to begin delivery of key sites in this area," it said. Coventry regeneration chief Cllr Jim O'Boyle said he had been talking to various people about the project for a long time.

Asked when the council may bring sites forward, he stressed that the scheme is in its "early days" and work is still being done on City Centre South.

He said: "There are no immediate plans to bring one particular site forward. A number of work is being done to scope out the potential benefits and challenges the whole site could present."

He added: "There's still a lot to be done, it's just laying out the potential going forward."
