Huge fire breaks out at Scots recycling centre as black smoke billows into sky

A huge blaze broke out out at a recycling depot in Aberdeen. Fire crews were scrambled to Bucksburn Recycling Centre on Bankhead Avenue at around 6.30pm this evening.

Seven appliances raced to the scene in the north west of the Granite City, with the blaze understood to have taken hold among a number of mattresses and other materials.

The crews were still on the scene tackling the blaze several hours later before extinguishing it several hours later.

The service sent seven engines to the scene where it found a large number of mattresses were on fire.

SFRS advised nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and left the scene late on Monday evening.

Footage from Fubar News shows thick black smoke billowing into the sky and the nearby area. In the clip, the giant plume can be seen towering over the local landscapeAnother photo shows the sheer scale of the fire as the clouds of smoke are seen from afar.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service urged locals to keep their windows closed and doors closed. It is not yet known if there have been any injuries.

An SFRS spokesperson added: "We were alerted at 6.32pm on Monday, September 16, to reports of a fire in the open at a recycling centre in the Bucksburn area of Aberdeen.

"Operations Control mobilised seven fire appliances to the city's Inverurie Road, where firefighters were met by a fire involving a quantity of mattresses and other materials.

"Firefighters remain at the scene working to extinguish the fire. There are no reported casualties."

Posting about the incident on X, formerly Twitter, the SFRS added: "Residents who live nearby are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed for the time being."
