Highways bosses say that works on the A444 around Griff Island in Nuneaton are now complete. For more than a month motorists had been hit with lane closures along the busy stretch of road.

But Warwickshire County Council has confirmed that the works have now been finished - ahead of schedule. Since July 21, drainage work was carried out, followed by removing and replacing the existing road surface across the entire carriageway.

Councillor Jan Matecki, cabinet member for transport and planning, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that this work has been done and has created a safer surface on a busy carriageway. It serves as the approach to Nuneaton town centre and now reflects our ambitions for the town.

“We were mindful that it is a well-used road so it was fantastic to see each phase of works finish ahead of schedule, allowing us to reopen the stretches of road early and minimise the disruption for commuters. I hope that, in part, repaid them for their understanding while the work took place."

But while the works on the A444 have finished early, the works to install traffic signals with a pedestrian crossing on nearby Greenmoor Road are behind schedule.

They were due to be completed at the start of September, but this has been pushed back until next month. The crossing has been finished but there has been a delay in securing the electrical connection, which the county council says should be completed by the middle of October.

But the removal of three trees - two on Heath End Road and one on Greenmoor Road - have been delayed for a completely different reason- nesting birds. Shire Hall has said that it has to wait until the chicks have flown the nest until they can be removed.
