Huge rescue operation after cat fell 10 metres into Nuneaton sewage storm tank

A rescue operation of a different kind was undertaken by firefighters - a cat trapped 10 ft down a storm tank. Together with the RSPCA, the crews were called into action at the Severn Trent plant on the outskirts of Nuneaton.

An eagle-eyed local, who was working at the plant that day, spotted the ginger cat inside the huge tank in Hartshill. They feared that the cat would not be able to get out and could drown if there was heavy rain.

So they raised the alarm with the RSPCA and its inspector Nicola Johnson realised that specialist equipment would be needed to get the cat out - so she called in the fire service.

"The poor cat was 10 metres down there - he must have gotten in by falling," she said. "We don’t know how long he had been in there as it might have taken time for someone to notice a cat was in there - it’s not something you expect to see."

Using a ladder, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters managed to get into the storm tank and safely capture the cat. Remarkably, apart from being soggy and scared, the moggy was not injured.

He was taken into the care of the RSPCA, who gave him a very apt name. "Given that he was rescued from a Severn Trent plant, we have named him Trent,” the inspector added. “"The name suits him well."

Trent was taken to the RSPCA’s Birmingham Animal Centre following the rescue on Sunday ,September 1. So far his owner has not been found and the car is not microchipped.

The RSPCA says if his owner does not come forward soon, Trent will be up for rehoming.
