The Bridget Jones series are probably the best romantic comedies out there, thanks to some great dialogue and solid chemistry from the actors.

And it turns out that a lot of Daniel Cleaver's cheeky-chappy lines came from actor Hugh Grant, who was seemingly free to basically do his own thing during filming, especially on the sequel.

Appearing on the BAFTA: A Life in Pictures podcast, Grant said that the famous "Hello, Mummy" line – from the scene where Daniel and Bridget are getting frisky and he discovers her huge underwear – was totally off the cuff.

"That last bit with the pants and "Hello Mummy", all that was just me messing around.

"And Bridget Jones 2, massively, I think I wrote my whole part."

Props to Renee Zellweger for not cracking up all the time.

Hugh Grant/Daniel Cleaver was missing from the third entry in the series, Bridget Jones' Baby, but the actor was totally fine with that, having tried to work out how his character could fit in the story with the filmmakers, and agreeing that things would work better without him.

The actor recently starred in Paddington 2, which became the best reviewed movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film's director Paul King said that Grant took on the role to mock the pompous nature of other actors.
