It’s rare that not being in Hull gives you FOMO, but as it's the UK City of Culture for 2017, there’s plenty happening up north to get your arts radar twitching.

If you can’t make it, or just find the north a bit cold, there’s a London showcase taking place for theatre companies who hail from and perform in Hull, who are participating in the yearlong programme of work.

The New Diorama Theatre, which is dedicated to supporting emerging companies, will play host to Hull theatre-makers, giving Londoners a chance to see their work.

The work includes a theatrical epic for a nightclub and a happy play about depression, as well as a ‘stand-up tragedy act’ and a a story about a woman’s survival.

Silent Uproar’s show about life with depression, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad) is written by Jon Brittain, who was shortlisted for Most Promising Playwright at the 2016 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Sad Little Man, created by Pub Corner Poets, combines performance poetry, physical theatre and film projection to tell the story of a young man in shock.

Other shows being showcased include Middle Child’s All We Ever Wanted Was Everything, written by playwright Luke Barnes, and Bare Skin on Briny Waters by Bellow Theatre.

The Hull 2017 City of Culture showcase runs from January 31 - February 4 at New Diorama Theatre; newdiorama.com
