Hull FC to get what 'they deserve' as Simon Grix addresses final round reality

Simon Grix believes there isn’t much difference between Hull FC finishing bottom and avoiding it on points difference. However, the interim coach, who admits he is 'part of it' is getting some 'fuel' from the club's current situation to be better next year regardless of where they end up.

The Black and Whites moved bottom of the Super League pile on Saturday evening, with Salford Red Devils taking them to the cleaners with a 58-4 victory and London Broncos instead putting in a spirited account to lose 12-8 at Catalans Dragons. The two results put Hull’s points difference -1 worse than London’s, with one round to go.

And with their final fixture moved to Saturday, Hull will know their fate when they play Catalans, with London heading to Warrington Wolves on Friday night, who can still finish in second place. Yet for Grix, the permutations of the final round are irrelevant with the table 'not lying.' But that doesn’t mean he isn’t expecting a ‘respectable’ performance next week.

"For us, not finishing bottom on points difference, if that's what we're thinking about, I don't think it matters," Grix said. "We're down there for a reason. This is definitely a season to forget for us, but the table doesn't lie, and you get what you deserve in the end. I can wear that. I'm part of it. I don't like it, but it will certainly be fuel for me—to be good and to try and help everyone be better. Hopefully, everyone else is in the same mould."

Grix continued: "I've said this on numerous occasions that it isn't going to be an overnight transformation. There's a lot of hard work to do. Our job is to get through this one and give it everything we've got this week, respect our fan base, and the people that are leaving us, and then we will rest and get back to work. But whether we get done on points difference and we finish bottom, or whatever it might be, we get what we deserve."

Hull have finished bottom just once before in their history, coming last in the 1963-64 season. Such a reality is now a genuine possibility, with Hull aiming to have the likes of Danny Houghton and Carlos Tuimavave back in the side next week and send them off with a showing that can at least restore some pride.

"I've only been here for a short period of time, but I've got a lot of respect for these blokes who have been at the club for a long time," Grix added. "It'd be great for them to go out off the back of a performance that they can be proud of. That would be my hope for next week—that we can throw everything into it. It is the last one, so there's nothing else to save ourselves for. We can give those lads a send off.

"We’ll see where we’re at there. Hopefully, we can get Mint and Carlos back out there. Mint will do everything he can do. His body is giving up, but I'm sure he'll be shoving it through the mill this week to make sure he's in contention."
