Hull FC loan update as Tony Smith hints at more moves for his players

Tony Smith has provided an update on Hull FC loan duo Denive Balmforth and Nick Staveley. The Black and White duo both featured in Newcastle Thunder's defeat to Halifax on Sunday with Balmforth crossing over for a second half try.

It was Balmforth's first of the season having played in all ten of Newcastle's Championship fixtures so far. Staveley has also been ever-present since making the move to the north-east, playing in his seventh game over the weekend.

Tony Smith, meanwhile, has watched all of the loan duo's games this season and has been impressed by what he's seen.

"Denive is still up there and doing okay," Smith explained. "There are some aspects of his game that are improving and some aspects where he still has a lot of work to do.

"Nick Staveley has also played quite a few games there and is doing really well. He's got a great attitude, he's advancing and he's getting better and better."

Matty Laidlaw, also on loan at Newcastle, has played five times for the Championship club but missed out on the game against Halifax. Connor Wynne is also on loan at Bradford Bulls.

Smith, meanwhile, is open to the possibility of more players going out on loan if the reserve grade league doesn't sort itself out.

"We have some players who may still go out on loan if we can't get a reserve grade game together or get an opponent to turn up for a game," Smith added. "We may have to look elsewhere.

"We've got some players who are not in form. They need to play some games in order to get back into form."
