Hull FC hooker Denive Balmforth has joined Newcastle Thunder on loan. The 19-year-old will go straight into the Championship club's squad for their league opener against Swinton Lions this weekend.

Traveling to Swinton on Sunday afternoon, Balmforth will be in contention to debut for the North East club, who will be aiming for the Championship play-offs this year. The Hull youngster made four Super League appearances last season and will now get vital experience in the sport's second tier.

No time period has been set on the loan, with Newcastle set to blood many Black and White players as the club's dual-registration partners in 2023.

The agreement allows the movement of players between both clubs to provide extra playing opportunities throughout the year, helping nurture the best young talents for both sides.

This includes the Reserves and Academy sides, who kick off their respective seasons at the start of next month.

Balmforth said on the move: “I’m excited to have signed for Thunder on loan. It’s an opportunity for me to improve my game and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from my time here.

“I’ve only joined up with the squad this week but there’s a great atmosphere between the lads and I can’t wait to help the team challenge in the Championship.”

Hull have three senior hookers to call upon this season, with Danny Houghton, Brad Dwyer and Joe Lovodua all expected to get some time in the position.
