‘Humans, horses and views from a van’ – East Yorkshire artist inspired by UK travels in a campervan
East Yorkshire artist Heather Burton is launching a solo exhibition of paintings at Pocklington Arts Centre, inspired by travels around the UK in a campervan.
The exhibition, called Humans, Horses and Views from a Van, will run from Monday, October 28 to Saturday, November 23. It will include a preview evening on Tuesday, October 29, from 5pm to 6.30pm.
Heather’s work, often large scale and all done with palette knives, rather than brushes, includes a range of subjects from northern landscapes to musicians and horses. All are inspired by observations from life on the road.

She said: “We spend a lot of time exploring the less travelled roads of the UK and Scotland and no routes are ever the same. The weather and landscape can change in seconds and it’s always a challenge to capture those brief moments.”
Former journalist now professional artist Heather’s studio is in Spaldington, near Howden. “What I’m always trying to capture, both in landscape and figurative pieces, is that sweet spot of movement, light and atmosphere.”
The artist comes from a family of keen amateur painters. Heather’s mum studied at the Grimsby School of Art while her father discovered his skills in watercolour painting when he retired.
Family commitments and a full-time career in journalism – Heather spent more than 40 years writing for regional and national magazines and newspapers, including the Hull Daily Mail - left little time for drawing and painting until her own daughters left home.
Her art career took off around ten years ago after winning a number of awards for her work and she is now represented by a number of galleries in Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lincolnshire. Heather also runs workshops for art groups across the north of England.
All of the work in the Pocklington exhibition will be for sale. Also, between now and Christmas, Heather will be donating 50 per cent of the proceeds from all sales of signed, mounted, limited edition giclee prints, along with a limited selection of original paintings, to Cancer Research UK.
