Humpback Whales Provide Winter Wonder in Norway's Far North

A pod of humpback whales in Norway’s far north put on a bit of a show for those lucky enough to be nearby on November 24.

Berthold Hinrichs often takes his kayak or sailboat out around Skjervoy, where this video was recorded. He told Storyful he’s observed groups of whales during the past several winters. He said there were fewer about this year, but “some days there are a lot of them still.”

He mentioned one whale from this encounter in particular, “a young guy,” he said, who was “often giving a show, jumping out of the water.”

As to why, Hinrichs simply said he was probably just having fun. Credit: Berthold Hinrichs via Storyful
