There were chaotic scenes at Euston station today as thousands of people made their way up north for the Labour Party's annual conference in Liverpool.

Commuters were confronted with a 'wall of people' at the fifth busiest station in London, with travellers standing 'shoulder to shoulder' enduring long delays as they waited for their trains.

Trains were delayed for around an hour on the West Coast main line.

James Davies, 32, said he was confronted by a "wall of people" as soon as he exited the Tube to catch a train to the Labour conference.

Mr Davies, a public policy manager for a trade body, who was attending the Labour conference for work said: "Whilst it’s always nice to spend some quality time with other commuters, I don’t think anyone here was counting on standing shoulder to shoulder with a station’s worth of people waiting for a severely delayed train."

Sarah Lambert, Head of Policy & Public Affairs at the National Autistic Society wrote on Twitter: "Chaos at #Euston with so many delayed trains going north... and just no room on the concourse. Station not fit for purpose."

Stephen Gribbin posted on Twitter: "Chaos at London Euston delays galore terrible awful service."

Another person wrote online: "Enjoying a seat on the floor in 1st class on the @VirginTrains 12.17pm from Euston to Manchester. Good job the carpet is clean...ish"

Virgin Trains said the delays were a matter for Network Rail as they were due to engineering works not being finished on time.

Network Rail said in a statement: "Euston was busier than normal today – this was a result of some overrunning engineering works between Amington Junction and Stafford Trent Valley this morning, which meant a small number of trains were diverted and were therefore late, causing some knock-on effects. We would like to apologise to customers who were affected.”
