Hundreds of Firefighters Deployed to Fight Wildfire in South of France

More than 1,000 French firefighters and police officers were deployed on August 17 as thousands of tourists and residents were evacuated amid a growing wildfire near Saint-Tropez.

Nearly 10,000 people were evacuated as 19 square miles (5,000 hectares) of land burned, according to the latest local news and official reports. Some roads were closed.

Strong winds, high temperatures, and dry land allowed the fire to spread, but reports suggest that the fire then slowed down due to an absence of wind.
