Hundreds of migrants continue to cross the English Channel

Hundreds of migrants continue to cross the English Channel to enter the UK. At least 8,452 people have successfully crossed the Channel this year surpassing the total for the whole of 2020. Britain is to give France £54m to help tackle the crisis after a record 430 people made the crossing on Monday. It is the second time in less than a year that the UK has pledged money to France to help prevent illegal immigration. Under the terms of the deal, France will increase police patrols along its beaches which will be expanded further north-west around Dieppe as well. The government insists it is committed to addressing the crisis. But Labour continues to call out the government over the current asylum system. Patel has also defended the Nationality and Borders Bill which could see illegal migrants imprisoned for up to 4 years.
