Planning on soaking up the rays in the Costa del Sol next month?

Well prepare to form an orderly queue at the airport – because British holidaymakers are set to be severely affected by a series of strikes by Spanish air traffic controllers over the summer season.

The two-hour walk outs will take place in both the mornings of afternoons of June 8th, 10th, 12th and 14th – causing delays for thousands of Brits jetting off.

The strikes, which are being organised by air union USCA, are a protest against the decision to take action against 61 air traffic controllers who shut down Barcelona’s airspace in December 2010.

But one of the sacked workers has still not returned to work more than four years later, something that the USCA describes as ‘inadmissible’.

Battling against the decision, one union member said: ‘The courts have declared the controllers “not guilty”. The Spanish air navigation service provider has sanctioned 61 controllers and they will have to face the courts again for this.’

‘The sacked worker only did what he had to do when, in November 2010 he had reached his maximum workable hours for that year.

‘Management is trying to distract us over the fact that they were the real actors of the conflict.’

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Martin Skelly, President of the Irish Travel Agents Association, described the walkouts as a ‘real inconvenience’.

‘The timing of this Spanish air traffic strike will be a real inconvenience to holidaymakers at what is the beginning of the summer holiday season’.
