Hundreds Rally Against Attempt to Ban Hong Kong Political Party

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district on Saturday, July 21, to rally for free speech in response to a police movement to ban a pro-independence political party.

John Lee, Hong Kong’s secretary for security, said he was considering a police request to ban the Hong Kong National Party (HKNP). HKNP’S dozen or so members were called a potential threat to national security and public safety, reported Hong Kong Free Press.

If banned, it would mark the first time since Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to Chinese rule in 1997 that the government has outlawed a political organization. Credit: Aaron Mc Nicholas via Storyful
