Hunt for shameless car thieves plaguing quiet residential street in Darwen

Residents on a quiet residential street say they are being plagued by brazen thieves who repeatedly try car doors.

Over the last few weeks, several sightings of shameless thieves have been reported by residents in the Sunnyhurst area of Darwen. Many have been captured on doorbell cameras - with at least two seemingly different men seen in the same stretch of Earnsdale Road in the last week alone.

Residents have been taking to groups on Facebook to warn each other to make sure their cars are locked while sharing clips of the thieves in a bid to identify them.

In the early hours of this morning (June 4) a man with shoulder length dark hair who was wearing a white top, a white hat and what appears to be a scarf, was seen trying the door of a white car in Earnsdale Road. One vehicle is understood to have been broken into close to the Sunnyhurst pub.

Interestingly, the man doesn't appear to be wearing gloves, indicating that police could potentially obtain fingerprint evidence to identify the suspect.

Last week a man, who appears to be a separate individual, was seen in the same area. His face can be seen clearly in the clip and he doesn't appear to have taken any steps to hide his face.

The incident in the early hours of this morning has been reported to police. Anyone with information, or who recognises the man, is asked to call police on 101 quoting log number LANCSPE-131504.

A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary said: "Police patrols will be taking place in the area and we are asking for anyone who has CCTV/ring door bell footage to get in touch. Please contact 101."
