Hunter Schafer Was ‘Mind-Blown’ Filming David Lowery’s ‘Mother Mary’
Hunter Schafer reached a euphoric state while filming the upcoming music-centric feature “Mother Mary.”
The “Euphoria” breakout star has a supporting role in David Lowery’s upcoming drama, which follows a pop star (Anne Hathaway) who has a twisted romantic relationship with a fashion designer (Michaela Coel). Schafer plays Hilda, the personal assistant to Coel’s co-lead character. The film is billed as an epic pop melodrama and features original songs by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Kaia Gerber and Jessica Brown-Findlay also star.

“It was a lot of fun and I think people are going to be mind-blown,” Schafer told IndieWire of the A24 film while on the “Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” premiere’s red carpet. “I was mind-blown.”
“Mother Mary” filmed in Germany throughout the SAG-AFTRA strike due to an interim agreement.
Schafer tapped into a similar fashion-centric character for franchise prequel “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” telling IndieWire that her character Tigris is a support system for divisive lead character Coriolanus Snow, played by Tom Blyth.
“Tigris is Coriolanus’ cousin and they have sort of been taking care of each other since they were really young,” Schafer said, “not only as cousins but as brothers and sisters sort of and kind of a parental support too. He’s bringing in the support and she’s helping him blend into the Capitol with her fashion skills and stuff.”
IndieWire critic David Ehrlich said Schafer’s turn as Tigris emphasized the character’s “pure and delicate heart seems almost pre-broken by the moral corruption to come” in the film’s review.
Aside from “Mother Mary,” Schafer is expected to return for “Euphoria” Season 3, which will be a “film noir” according to series creator Sam Levinson. Schafer previously served as a consultant for her “Euphoria” character Jules and also co-wrote a Season 2 episode with Levinson. The third season is slated to air in 2025.
In the meantime, Schafer is appearing in auteur Yorgos Lanthimos’ star-studded “AND” with Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Joe Alwyn, and Jesse Plemons.
Schafer will also star in Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo” alongside Jessica Henwick.
