Hurricane Fiona was set to bring heavy rainfall and life-threatening flash flooding to the Turks and Caicos Islands on September 20, a day after causing mass power cuts and flooding in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The National Hurricane Center said Fiona would bring “hurricane conditions” to Turks and Caicos on Tuesday morning, with tropical storm conditions set for the southeastern Bahamas.
Turks and Caicos authorities warned residents to stay inside and refrain from travel across all islands while a hurricane warning was in effect.
Early on Tuesday, Fiona was upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, making it the first major hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. Credit: Jamie Hill via Storyful
