Husband gives police unusual reason for stopping his BMW on M56 hard shoulder
A driver has been slammed by police after giving his reason for stopping on the hard shoulder of the M56. Traffic police spotted the white BMW 4 Series, with its hazard lights on, stopped on the hard shoulder of the eastbound carriageway.
The car was stopped a quarter of a mile away from junction five, near Manchester Airport. Officers stopped to speak to the BMW driver at the side of the motorway.
North West Motorway Police says the driver told them he had stopped his car because he was waiting for a call from his wife. According to the driver, the call was to inform him that she had made it through the gates at Manchester Airport.

But the driver's excuse was not a valid reason for stopping in the hard shoulder, and the officers decided to take action. A North West Motorway Police spokesperson wrote on X yesterday (December 10): "When an officer spoke to the driver of this vehicle, he stated he was waiting for a call from his wife to say when she had got through the gates at the airport.
"TOR [traffic offence report] issued for parking on the hard shoulder. Please remember, the hard shoulder is for emergencies only."
