It's been a hugely popular place to go, but HWKRLAND will close down in Gateshead this weekend, meaning that ambitious plans for a huge Christmas village on the banks of the River Tyne have now been shelved.

Going into the already popular By the River Brew development on the Quayside, HWKRLAND was packed out over the summer with fans flocking to Eurovision screenings, a Star Wars May the 4th day, an Oasis night and to watch every match of Euro 2024, including England's final defeat to Spain and, after a busy few months, the team behind HWKRLAND announced they'd be going all out for Christmas, with the riverbank turned into a massive winter village, complete with a Bavarian beer hall, private dining igloos, cosy tipi bar and an apres ski experience.

However, after all of the buzz around WNTERLAND, it sadly will no longer happen, with a post going out on the HWKRLAND Facebook page on Monday afternoon, to announce that this coming weekend will be the last few days of trading, as the team blamed the delay in the Tyne Bridge works for the decision to close, one which they say was made with 'a heavy heart.'

The statement read: "After consultation with By the River Brew Co. it is with a heavy heart that we bring you this message. We have had news that the deconstruction of the Tyne Bridge works are now delayed which could cause major disruption to this winter's planned events and operations. so the consensus is that the HWKRLAND project at By the River will come to an end."

It added; "We would like to thank all the amazing food traders who fed you all the delicious bait, the team who served the hundreds of thousands of drinks, all the DJs, performers and entertainers... and to all the customers who visited us this past year! We hope you can all come down this weekend and say a huge farewell to HWKRLAND and say a massive 'Bye the River!'"
