I saw it first! Fisherman reeling in pollock has tug-of-war with hungry seal
Tim Smith was angling for pollock off shipwrecks in the English Channel when he got a bite from what he thought was a massive catch
A fisherman who battled to reel in a powerful fish was stunned to discover he was having a tug-of-war with a SEAL.
Tim Smith was angling for pollock off shipwrecks in the English Channel when he got a bite from what he thought was a massive catch.
He spent ten minutes fighting to bring it to the surface - but when he finally lifted it from the water he found the seal was trying to take the fish for itself.
Skipper Owen Mallia managed to distract the seal by throwing it another fish to eat so it would release the pollock - allowing Tim to bring it aboard intact.
The amusing incident happened 35 miles off the coast of Dartmouth, Devon, where Owen, 53, runs sea fishing trips on his boat 'Outlaw'.

He said: ‘Thankfully only the fish was hooked and as he reeled-in his pollock the seal stubbornly let go and disappeared back to the deep.
‘It was all quite comical really. I have never seen one out there in all the years we have been operating there. We were all quite stunned.’
