The ashes of notorious serial killer Ian Brady will not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor where he buried his young victims, a coroner has said, amid demands for his body to be destroyed by the state.

Brady’s body is currently being held under guard after the 79-year-old died in Ashworth Hospital, a secure psychiatric unit, earlier this week.

Opening the inquest into Brady’s death on Tuesday, coroner Christopher Sumner said that his body would not be released until he received assurances that the killer’s ashes would not be scattered on on the same moor where his victims were buried.

Lawyers for Brady have now confirmed that there is ‘no likelihood’ of Brady’s ashes being scattered on Saddleworth Moor, and Mr Sumner has now said that his body will be released to solicitor Robin Makin at 2PM today.

It comes as the brother of one of Brady’s victims called for his remains to be “destroyed”.

Alan Bennett, the brother of Keith – the 12-year-old third victim of Brady and Myra Hindlay – said the body should be “destroyed”.

“Surely there is a simple way of ensuring this: by not releasing his remains/ashes to anyone other than a blood relation,” he wrote on Facebook.

“And since he has no known surviving close birth relatives, his remains should be destroyed by the authorities.”

Keith Bennet’s remains have never been found and Brady refused to reveal their location, despite numerous pleas from the family.

Speaking at the inquest, Mr Sumner said: ‘Emotions are high, they are bound to be. I wanted to have assurance that when Mr Stewart-Brady is cremated his ashes will not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor.

‘I think that’s a right and proper moral judgment to make. I think it would be offensive if Mr Stewart-Brady’s ashes were scattered on Saddleworth Moor.’

Cody Lachley, who wrote to Brady while he was in jail, has instead claimed that the Glasgow born killer wanted his ashes to be scattered in Scotland.

Brady and his partner Myra Hindley ,who died in prison in 2002, tortured and murdered five children between July 1963 and October 1965 near Manchester.

Both were jailed in 1966 for three murders before later confessing to another two.
