Aston Villa are set to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea in a deal worth around £35m, and former claret and blue striker Dwight Yorke believes it could be a deal that the London club regret.

Maatsen is preparing to complete a move to Villa in a move that will see Unai Emery seek to strengthen their full-back department for the new season.

Maatsen, who is currently away with the Netherlands at Euro 2024, has had loan spells previously with Charlton, Coventry City and Burnley, but in the second half of last season he made a big impact in the Bundesliga and helped Dortmund to reach the Wembley Champions League final, during which they lost to Real Madrid.

Maatsen, who made the Champions League team of the season as a result of his performances, is a marauding left-back who can operate as a wing-back too. As Villa's transfer window plans begin to materalise, the Dutchman will be among the first to come through the doors of Bodymoor Heath ahead of the club's entry into European football's premier competition themselves.

For Villa fans, it's an exciting deal, but Chelsea fans will look on as a player with substantial potential leaves the club, albeit for a decent transfer fee.

In a recent interview, former Villa striker, Yorke stated that it's a good deal for Villa : "I do think Ian Maatsen is a brilliant signing by Aston Villa. Unai Emery has the Champions League next season and we saw him perform brilliantly at Borussia Dortmund, he'll be a good player and builds on Aston Villa's already impressive squad depth.

"I think Chelsea will regret letting Maatsen go, but they have so many players at the club that they clearly don't even know who their best players actually are. Maatsen is another good player they've let go, and it's probably to help out their Financial Fair Play situation."
