Ice bath and cold-water plunge benefits as Princes Dock sauna opens
The UK's first floating sauna is preparing to open on Princes Dock this weekend. WYLD sauna provides a traditional Nordic experience and offers guests a place to relax and escape in the city centre.
The space consists of a new floating pontoon containing a 30-person sauna, complete with four ice baths and two cold waterfall showers. Four heated outdoor showers with salt rub and direct access to jump straight into Princes Dock water from the sauna are also available.
Once finished with the water, there are four heated outdoor showers with salt rub, outdoor seating, and changing rooms equipped with hairdryers and lockers to use. But what are the benefits of these types of treatments, and who should be using them?

Ice Baths
Cold water immersion has several benefits, particularly for athletes and those engaged in intense physical activity. Some of the key advantages include reduced muscle soreness, inflammation control, improved circulation and mental toughness.
A major benefit is that it enhances recovery. Regular use of ice baths can speed up recovery times between workouts and, therefore, help athletes maintain their training schedules.
Cold Water Swimming
Cold water swimming has similar benefits to ice baths; however, it has a few additional advantages. These include boosting the immune system, mental clarity, building resilience, and the sport's social interaction.
Cold water swimming can trigger the release of endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. The cold stimulates blood flow, which can improve circulation and overall cardiovascular health. The shock of cold water can also increase alertness and improve mental clarity, helping you feel more awake and focused.
Saunas
Saunas offer a range of benefits for both physical and mental well-being. The heat from the sauna helps to relax muscles and soothe aches in both muscles and joints, providing a calming effect that can reduce stress levels.
Additionally, the heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow and improving circulation throughout the body. Sweating in a sauna can help flush out toxins from the body, promoting overall health and well-being.
Finally, it is also good for skin health. The increased blood flow and sweating can lead to clearer skin, as the heat helps to open up pores and cleanse them.
