Ice Chunks Undulate on Freezing Lake Michigan as Storm Buries Chicago in Snow

Icy waves struck the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Chicago, on January 31, as cold weather continued to hit Illinois and other Midwestern states.

Footage taken by Samuel Wood shows an icy Lake Michigan undulating, with the Chicago skyline seen in the background.

Describing the sight as “otherworldly,” Wood told Storyful that the lake that was previously frozen, was broken up by “the immense power of the lake to break up the ice into smaller and smaller chunks.”

The National Weather Service predicted an “Arctic blast” with chills of -20 F in the coming week and warned of a potential for “ice jams” on the lake. Credit: Samuel Wood via Storyful
