The Met Office has issued an ice warning affecting Birmingham the Black Country and the wider West Midlands hours after a snow deluge hit the area. The weather agency has issued a Yellow Warning with icy patches expected to form on Tuesday (November 19) evening and through the night.

The Met Office has said there will ‘probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces’. In a forecast update it said: “Rain, sleet and snow will continue to clear southwards across England and Wales with clearing skies to follow.

“Temperatures are expected to fall below or close to freezing quite widely across the warning area with icy patches forming on untreated freezing surfaces.”

The warning continued: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

The warning area includes all areas of the West Midlands – the West Midlands Conurbation – Birmingham, the Black Country and Coventry, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

As well as the East Midlands, the East of England, London and the South East, Cheshire in the North West and some of the West Country. It is in place from 5pm on Tuesday (November 19) to 10am on Wednesday (November 20).

There is a snow and ice warning for south Wales. And for East Anglia and along the east coast beyond Newcastle-upon-Tyne. With snow and ice also an issue for Northern Ireland, the west coast of Scotland and in the Highlands.
