Iconic Floating Restaurant Towed From Hong Kong Harbour Days Before it Capsizes

Hong Kong’s iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant capsized in the South China Sea on Sunday, June 19, after being towed from the harbour where it operated just days previous, local reports said.

Footage by Stefan Irvine shows the large floating restaurant, also known as Jumbo Kingdom, being towed away from the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter on Tuesday, June 14.

The restaurant’s parent company, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, said the vessel encountered adverse weather conditions when passing the Xisha Islands and capsized on Sunday, according to the Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP).

The company said salvage works would be too difficult to carry out as the water depth exceeded 1,000 metres but that no crew members had been injured.

The famous landmark, which opened in 1976, went out of business having suffered deficits of more than HK$100 million (USD $12,729,500) since 2013, according to HKFP. It was en route to China for refurbishment. Credit: Stefan Irvine via Storyful
