Ilkley Moor fire: 'Intense' blaze breaks out on West Yorkshire moorland

Firefighters have been tackling a large blaze emitting "intense heat" on Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) said fire crews, specialist wildfire officers and equipment from around the county had been deployed.

Several acres of the moorland was on fire as the UK saw the warmest day of the year so far.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) watch manager Martyn Hughes tweeted footage showing the scale and ferocity of the flames.

"The intense heat, steep slopes & rough terrain are causing the fire to spread rapidly whilst we try to get near the flames," he wrote.

"Despite frantic efforts by all involved it looks like the moor will continue to burn long in to the sunset."

Bradford Council warned people living nearby to stay away.

"Can people living near to the moorland fire in Ilkley please stay indoors and keep windows closed," it wrote on Twitter. "Can everyone please stay away from the area."
