Illegal Migration Bill won’t solve small boats crossing channel, says Keir Starmer

The government's Illegal Migration Bill will not solve the problem of small boats crossing the English Channel, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

Under the policy, those who arrive in the UK illegally will be detained and "promptly removed, either to their home country or a safe third country," and will not be able to return or claim British citizenship.

The Labour leader has called for a cross-border police unit between the UK and France.

"There's a huge amount the government could do, but instead it's producing pretty well the same legislation [as] a year ago."
