Ant and Dec couldn't help but have a cheeky jab at Sunderland during tonight's I'm A Celebrity, as campmates suffered their 'most terrifying day' yet.

The Geordie presenters begged people not to hit back as they found an opportunity to mock Mackems within the first seconds on the show.

It came as the pair introduced the show, with Ant saying: "Welcome to Australia on the most terrifying day our celebrities have faced so far."

The die-hard Newcastle United fans then went on to introduce a "horrendous and miserable" challenge the campmates had previously endured.

The Fright Bus challenge saw all of the celebrities boarding a dirty night bus filled with critters. And there was a lot of screaming from the campmates as they struggled to complete the hellish challenge.

But Ant and Dec couldn't help but joke that the challenge wouldn't have been as cruel as sending the campmates to Sunderland.

Updating viewers on the campmates day so far, Dec said: "It all began when they boarded a horrendous and miserable bus ride to hell."

The pair could barely contain their laughter as Ant chimed in: "Were they going to Sunderland?" And Dec took it a step further, replying: "We're not that cruel" before adding, "Only kidding, don't '@' me, don't '@' me."

It's not the first time the pair have poked fun at Sunderland. It became a regular occurrence while Lioness Jill Scott, from Sunderland, entered the jungle and went on to win in 2022.
