A great-grandmother is using five air fryers to cook a Boxing Day meal for 14 people, because it's "cheaper, quicker and healthier".

Beverley Jarvis, 75, is hosting for 14 of her loved ones and has vowed not to switch on the oven, instead choosing to rely on five air fryers.

She has prepared a wonderful menu of sugar and rum glazed baked gammon and salmon with satsuma, chilli and parsley, which will all be prepared in her favourite kitchen gadget.

The author, who penned the 'Everyday Air Fryer Cookbook', says the gadget is 20 per cent faster than her oven, which she now rarely uses. Beverley, from Ashford, Kent, said: "They are table top ready. They are just so easy to use. My 5.7L one uses max 1,700 watts. An oven uses 5,000 watts.

"Air fryers are 20 per cent faster - you save considerably on energy. It costs just 7p to cook two portions chips in an air fryer and 21p in oven. It's cheaper to use than your oven."

Beverley was converted to air fryers when her son bought himself the kitchen gadget in May 2022. Impressed, she immediately went and bought one and now has a collection of five.

Last year she cooked a three course meal on Christmas Day for her family, cooking everything from pigs in blankets to roast potatoes in the air fryer.

This year Beverley is hosting for Boxing Day and will be serving up salmon and gammon. She will prepare her gammon on Boxing Day and soak it in cold water for three hours before cooking. Gammon joints take just 15 minutes per 450g in the air fryer.

Beverley will cook the a 500g salmon fillet by blotting it dry and putting it in with the juice of a satsuma, parsley, one chopped chilli and 15g of butter. She said: "That cooks in 17 minutes. It's 40 minutes in the oven."

For dessert Beverley will be making caramelised fruit - with nectarines, pears and plums. She also plans to make some cheese scones, which take just 15 minutes.

Beverley isn't doing the Christmas dinner this year but says the air fryer makes the "best roast potatoes". She said: "You put in one teaspoon of oil and they are delicious. They are 30 minutes instead of an hour. Jacket potatoes are also great in an air fryer."

Beverley says air fryers are great as it means she can be stress-free while entertaining. She says people are surprised you can cook most things in them, including eggs and rice.

She said: "They are very versatile. Eggs are successful in an air fryer. You cook them without any water at 120 degrees and 14 minutes for hard boiled and 10 minutes for soft boiled. They are perfectly boiled eggs."

Beverley doesn't know how much she has saved since using her air fryer but has noticed a reduction in her electricity bill. She now mainly cooks with her slow cooker, microwave and air fryer.

She said: "The air fryer is cheaper to run, particularly when cooking small quantities. Cooking a chicken in the air fryer takes 53 minutes, using 54KWH. Cooking the same weight chicken in the oven takes 76 minutes, using 1.57KWH."

She added: "The chicken is more likely to be a bit dry too, cooked in an oven, whilst it will be beautifully moist cooked in air fryer, yet retain a crispy golden skin. And it's three-and-a-half times cheaper to use than an oven."

Beverley's cookbook the Everyday Air Fryer Cookbook is available to buy now.
